Is ‘exercise’ a generic good-for-you health advice? A chiropractor’s perspective

Too often as a society we emphasise the importance of exercising and working out without truly understanding its long-term value. As a result, the “exercise” advice sometimes become empty words.

Thankfully with science, we can answer specific questions regarding exercise. We can with confidence advise on the purpose of exercise and the long term benefits or, in this case, the long-term consequence of not exercising.

A study published last year just recently became available online. The study looked at 1.2 MILLION males between the age of 16 and 19 years old and found that  muscular weakness in adolescence is associated with disability 30 years later.

That’s pretty intense, no?

The narrative is no longer exercise is good for you. We know from science that NOT EXERCISING, or specifically muscular weakness, is associated with disability even up to thirty years later. The study also found the association to be strong.

What about exercise for adults?

If you are suffering from chronic pain, exercise is 100% beneficial for you. We have discussed the studies supporting exercise for pain in our earlier post Five Reasons Why Exercise Always Wins.

If you are not suffering from pain, the good news is exercise ALSO has tangible value for you.

Running has up to TWELVE health benefits

You know how people like to say running is bad for your knees? That’s broscience. That’s nonsense. There are numerous studies that demonstrate running is NOT bad for your knees. We will discuss more about this next time but, for a teaser, research is showing that running a marathon can REVERSE knee damage.

How awesome is this?

A separate study published just two days ago found running to have at least twelve benefits. They include reducing the risk of:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Cancer
  • Respiratory disease
  • High cholesterol
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Disability

Running also improves:

  • Postural balance
  • Heart function
  • Aerobic fitness
  • Adiposity status
  • Metabolic fitness

According to study, all it takes is running ONCE A WEEK!

Exercise is AMAZINGLY good for you

A lot people want to know what they can do to be healthy.

The first thing they turn to is almost what they can pay for – health supplements, gym membership, organic food, chiropractic packages.

When it comes to exercising, most people think of committing to a gym membership and working out three times a week. Most people think they have to push themselves to their limits. Most people think they it’s a big commitment.

The good news folks is that you can start small and start simple.

You can start exercising today.

You can start running today.

One run a week is all it takes to start living a healthier life.
